no i understand how to actually take a long exposure shot but in order for me to take a shot longer than 30sec or so i actually have to manually have my finger on the button to hold the aperature open

make sure your on M, scroll past 30 seconds, BULB will be there. get a roll of scotch tape, cut off a piece and put it over your button. you'll be able to have your shutter open up to 30 minutes.

D50's don't have the mirror lock-up feature in the shooting modes. It can only be used when you are going to clean the sensor. So yeah, the only way you can shoot long exposure will be standing there holding the button, or taping it down.

actually there is a better way of doing this, you need the remote trigger for your camera, set it to bulb and remote trigger(selftimer but keep scrolling)
and one press opens shutter and another to close. saves you from destorying your shutter relase. and its only about 7 bucks (AUD) on ebay.
good luck
